Diane Keaton’s charming Lloyd Wright-designed midcentury...

Tucked behind a long gated drive in Pacific Palisades’ coveted Rustic Canyon, an iconic piece of Hollywood and architectural history is now on the market for $12.8 million.

Known as the Newman Residence, the estate was originally commissioned by nine-time Oscar-winning composer Alfred Newman and designed by Lloyd Wright — the visionary son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

More recently, it was reimagined by legendary actress Diane Keaton, who brought her signature reverence for classic architecture to the restoration.

Design by Lloyd Wright

Completed in the 1940s, the estate is a prime example of livable midcentury-modern style, with warm materials, angular rooms, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Original brick and concrete finishes remain intact throughout, paired with custom built-ins and Wright’s signature approach to indoor-outdoor flow.

Credit for that goes to architect Lloyd Wright, son of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright.

Though Wright (the son) is perhaps best known for easily recognizable architectural homes like the eerie John Sowden House and the Mayan Revival-style Derby House, this residence shows a more personal approach to design.

A restauration worthy of the… Oscars?

When Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton acquired the home, she treated it not as a blank canvas but as a historic treasure.

She restored the original woodwork and furniture, opened up the layout, and transformed the upstairs primary suite into a glass-walled retreat that floats above the canyon.

With special consideration given to the kitchen

The kitchen was modernized with an eye for integrity, balancing function with style and using earthy materials that complement the home’s architectural traits.

Keaton’s work doesn’t overshadow the original design, it merely fine tunes it and by doing so, ushers the residence into a new era.

And each of the bedrooms, which offer softened versions of a classic midcentury space

The bedrooms in particular caught our eye with their connection to the outdoors — through oversized windows or sliding glass doors that open to the vibrant outside.

With two detached bedroom suites

Glass walls in the primary bedroom look out over the pool and canyon beyond, framed by sycamore, fruit, and oak trees. The bedroom incorporates quintessential midcentury modern design elements (like the built-in shelves) softened by a warm whites and beiges.

Adding more refined accommodation options are two separate detached bedroom suites plus a music studio that doubles as a guest house.

Featuring a separate seating area with a brick fireplace

Other notable design features that anchor the home firmly in its design period, despite the chic updated look, are its brick fireplaces, one of which anchors a cozy seating area off the bedroom.

A private canyon escape

Despite its sense of seclusion, the home is just minutes from Sunset Boulevard and the best of Pacific Palisades.

And it comes with more than a good location in a family-friendly neighborhood that’s starting anew; it comes with an architectural integrity that sets it apart, plus some stardust sprinkled by its restaurateur.
